Rhye
コペンハーゲン出身のロビンとベルリンに暮らすカナダ人のミロシュの２人のミュージシャンが出会ったのはひょんなことからだった。彼らのクリエイティビティーが衝突し、新しく発見した愛情からインスピレーションが溢れ出し、美しさだけに焦点を合わせた音楽が生まれた。しかしRhyeが結成されるずっと前から、２人はお互いの存在が気になっていた。
「もう何年も前からミロシュの音楽を聴いている」と、ロビンは話す。「それで自分のクワドロンでの作品のリミックスを手掛けることになって、ミロシュに頼もうって話になったんだ。」
世界の反対側にいたクワドロンのファンであるマイク・ミロシュは、彼らの作品を新たな方向へ導く機会を与えられたことに興奮していた。しかし、戻ってきたリミックスを聴いてロビンは驚いた。「実際にはあまりリミックスのようには聴こえなかった。それよりも、マイクが素晴らしいボーカルを幾つも重ね合わせ、まるで新しい曲を作ったように聴こえたんだ」と、ロビンは言う。「どっちかというと、それは違う曲のラフなデモみたいで、彼のボーカルにインスピレーションを受けて僕も新しい曲を作りたくなったんだ。」
その小さな考えは、より大きなアイディアを生むきっかけとなった。ロビンはそれらのトラックに再び取りかかり、ミロシュが作った断片から新しい曲を作り上げていった。そして多忙なスケジュールが落ち着くと、ミロシュはセッションを行うためにベルリンからロビンのコペンハーゲンにあるスタジオへと向かった。２人はすぐに意気投合し、60年代ソウル・ミュージックと好きな映画のサントラについて盛り上がった。そして、真っすぐ心に突き刺さり、鼓動が早まるようなサウンドこそが何よりも大切だ、という考えも一致した。偉そうな態度も、巧妙な戦略も、エゴも、ロック・スターとして格好つけることもなく、ただ魂から響く純粋なサウンドだけを追求したかった。「２人ともエモーショナルな音楽がすごく好きなんだ。ぞくぞくするような音楽がね」と、ロビンは話す。「マイクのサウンドにはそういった質がある。彼の声は頭から離れないんだ。そのボーカルには浸透していくものが含まれている。」 「シャーデーに似てるってこの６年間くり返し言われてきた。もういい加減その効果は薄れてしまったよ」と、ミロシュは言う。「いつも女性ボーカルに惹かれてた。癒しの効果を音楽に求めるから。安心感とかね。僕は、音楽の中に存在する美しさに興味を抱く。現在よく耳にする音楽が持つ典型的な特徴よりもね。」
「２人で色んなアイディアを試しながら、石を削って彫刻を作るように、ゆっくりと曲を完成させていった」と、ミロシュは世界の反対側にいる相手と共に曲作りを行ったことについて思い返す。その後ロビンがロサンゼルスへ引っ越し、ミロシュのスケジュールが落ち着き、Rhyeの活動は軌道に乗り始めた。１ヶ月近くをかけてその映画のようなスケール感の大きいサウンドが作り出された。
Rhyeの作品は壮大で野心的。その響きは、Capitol Recordsのスタジオでレコーディングされたように聴こえる。しかし、Rhyeには秘密があった。「ここロス・フェリツにある僕のマンションで全部制作したんだ」と、ロビンは笑う。「こんなことを言ったら神秘性がなくなってしまうかな！」いや、むしろロビンの告白から、更なる疑問が生まれる。古典的な曲構成の温かみとデジタル・ダンス・ミュージックの精密さの両方を備えたアルバムを、どのようにしてロサンゼルスのマンションの一室で作ったのだろうか？ロビンはマンションの部屋を小さなスタジオとして使用しており、そこには幾つかのレコーディングギア、何本かの美しいギター、そして暑さを和らげてくれる小さなファンしかない。
「ここですべてをレコーディングした」と、ロビンは話す。「ホルンもドラムもね。完全なセットではさすがに無理だったけど。スネアやキックとか、それぞれ別にレコーディングを行った。ハープも引きずって運び込んだよ。」
「早い時間から彼の部屋へ行き、空腹で栄養不足になる寸前の夜中までずっとスタジオにこもっていた」と、ミロシュは思い出しながら話す。「休憩のないセッションみたいで、ただずっとやり続けた。」
そして１ヶ月間“やり続けた”Rhyeのセッションは終わりを迎えた。ミロシュはベルリンへ戻り、しばらくしてから現在妻となった恋人と一緒になるためにロサンゼルスへ引っ越した。ロビンは相変わらずロサンゼルスにて曲作りで多忙な毎日をおくった。しかし、ロス・フェリツで過ごしたあの暑い日々の中で行われた音楽的実験は、彼らがミュージシャンとして、そして同時に感情的にも繋がったその相性の良さが、エネルギーの源となっていた。
Rhyeが自らのPVに出演したり、プロモーション写真に顔を出さないのは意図しているもので、意味ありげなマーケティング手法でも秘密主義であるわけでもない。それはただ単純に彼らが作った音楽を世界の人たちに楽しんでもらいたいだけである。
